I want to try yoga, but I don't have the "right" clothes!

I cannot tell you how many times I have heard this from people (or some variation of this statement). Yoga is not about clothes, appearances, or even the space you decide to practice in...It's about you! So many people capture their every move (and outfit) on Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and FB (I know I am missing some of the newer social media sites, cut me some slack, I'm pushing 40!), but yoga should be a time where you focus on you. Don't worry about your "followers" or "friends," just focus on you and you're comfort.

This is why I have a very important rule in my yoga classes, no pictures or videos. Not that I don't want to support the studio that I teach at or think that the yogis that attend aren't beautiful inside and out, but because I want everyone to feel comfortable in the space and in their practice.

If you want to wear shorts and a t-shirt, perfect! If you are a couture yoga clothes person and that makes you feel empowered and strong, rock it! Clothes do not matter! It's just like my mom told me in high school...If someone doesn't want to talk to you or be your friend because they don't like how you look, you don't need them in your life. Same goes for yoga. If you can't be yourself or be comfortable in the space you choose to practice in, that place is not for you. The same goes for clothes. Don't price yourself out of doing yoga. You don't need to spend a ton of money on your outfit. Wear what you have and what you are most comfortable in. If you decide you need to wear something different, go shopping, make a shirt, heck, knit something! Whatever you do, make sure you're doing it for you and your practice, not to meet someone else's expectations.

I do have one request, wear something! I know that naked yoga is a thing, and that's cool, but not everyone is comfortable with nakedness or excessive sharing of your surface area (that's my PC way of saying cover up the essential bits out of respect for others). So stretch and breathe in what the Good Lord gave you, but be respectful of the others in a class. If you're at home shake (or stretch) what your mama gave you! I live in the middle of nowhere, nakedness is awesome, but I still haven't been able to work of the hutzpah to try naked yoga outside. After all, I have two children and I am constantly telling them to keep their clothes on outside. We have ticks, no one wants to have to put bug spray on their nether region!

In conclusion, this post isn't really about clothes at all. It's about being good with yourself. Embrace the very personal practice that is yoga, and reminding yourself that uniting your breath with your movements, and being the best you possible is why we do yoga in the first place!

Namaste & have an awesome day!

Here is a great place to shop for yoga clothes if the shopping bug bites!
